| If you are planning a trip, you may be considering whether or not to take your pet. Most pets other than dogs do not travel well, and would be much happier staying at home with a sitter or being in the care of a trusted adult. But many dogs make great traveling companions, providing their basic needs are met.
First, consider the journey itself, whether by car or plane or other means. Would your dog be comfortable "on board" for the duration? What provisions does the company you are traveling with make for animals? Does the place you are traveling to require immunizations different from where you live? If the journey seems doable, and the destination will suit your pet, your next step is to find pet-friendly accommodations. If you are planning to stay with friends or family, make sure ahead of time that they understand your pet's needs and that you are willing to take the time, while there, to help your pet feel comfortable in the unfamiliar environment. Otherwise, consider staying in a pet-friendly hotel. If choosing this option, remember to keep your pet leashed when not enclosed. As responsive as it may to be you in your home environment, your pet may be sufficiently unsettled by traveling that it will bolt out an open door and fail to respond to the usual commands. Being attuned to your pet's needs, and taking the time to exercise and play with it as usual, will ensure happy travels for both. |
