Breed InformationThe Afghan Hound is strikingly dignified. They are known for their aloofness and for holding their head high. The Afghan Hound is regarded as an ancient breed and were used as 'sight hounds', that is, instead of hunting by scent like most hounds, they would hunt using their sense of sight instead, along with their speed. They were originally used to hunt hares and gazelles in the mountains of Afghanistan. SIZE The Afghan Hound is a large dog with a typical shoulder height of up to 74 cm in males, with the females slightly less. This breed is not for confined living areas. COAT The Afghan Hound has fine, silky, and very long hair that covers its forequarters, flank, ribs, hindquarters, and legs. The coat can come in a variety of colours such as black, brindles, solids or tan. CHARACTER & TEMPERAMENT Typically, the Afghan Hound is dignified and extremely aloof, with their hunting instincts still fairly strong. They are extremely sensitive, kind, and loyal. They must be treated with care, and must not be left unattended with young children (nor should any breed). This dog can get along with other household pets preferably when raised together from a young age. CARE Because of the quality and length of its coat, an Afghan Hound requires careful grooming that may last for an hour ideally twice a week. Professional grooming requires special instruments to make sure the coat will kept pristine. Afghan Hounds prefer living indoors and requires a soft, comfortable bed. TRAINING Although the Afghan Hound are extremely intelligent, this breed has a reputation of a slow obedience result as they are a semi-independent dog. Owners should not be surprised if their dogs choose to ignore commands. It is highly recommended that this dog be trained with consistency. ACTIVITY This breed requires plenty of exercise throughout the day to burn off energy. It is recommended that exercise be done outdoors as this breed requires large amounts of space when playing.
