Breed InformationAiredale Terriers are unique within the Terrier group, as they are one of the few terrier breeds that have a relatively large height. Combining the looks of both elegance and power, the Airedale has a long snout, flat cheeks and very powerful jaws. They have small, dark brown eyes, which are full of the calm confidence other terrier breeds often possess. The Airedale is often given the nickname the "King of Terriers”, because it is said that they can do any job other terriers can, only better. Size Adult Airedale Terriers can reach up to a height of 61 cm at the shoulder, and usually weigh around 25 kg. Their length varies, however it is usually between 75-85 cm Coat Airedale Terriers have hard, wiry coats, with a soft undercoat. Unless overdue for clipping, Airedale Terriers do not shed their hair. The colour of the head and legs is tan, with dark grizzle to black covering the rest of the body. There is little to no variation in this colour scheme. Character and Temperament Airedale terriers are very energetic dogs, with above average intelligence. They have a very sweet disposition, and are devoted to their owners, which makes them compatible with children. While the Airedale is known for its playfulness and courage, it will often be stubborn also, often challenging other dogs for dominance, and as such they can be a bit aggressive towards other dogs. They will, however, often bark loudly and for long periods of time, so it is not advised to keep them tied up. Care If the Airedale is to be a show dog, appropriate clipping must be adhered to, and this is best left to professional clippers. However, as a household pet, Airedales should be clipped every 3-4 months, and brushed or combed daily when possible. The usual clip style for Airedale Terriers is to have the body and head trimmed, leaving longer hair on the legs and beard. They are not the fondest of baths; however they will need baths regularly, as they can build up smell quickly. Training Airedale Terriers are considered to be extremely intelligent dogs, and as such training, especially from an early age, can prove to be successful. They possess strong work instincts, and as such, with a devoted owner, there is very little the Airedale cannot be trained to do. They are often distracted by sight, scent and hearing however, and this high mental energy level must be understood by the trainer. The most effective way to train an Airedale is through praise. Harsh correction rarely works. Activity Airedale Terriers contain extremely high levels of energy, and as such will need room to run around in, preferably a fenced garden. They are keen explorers, and as such, if not properly exercised, will often attempt to dig. To counter this desire, at least one walk a day will suffice.
