Breed InformationThe Akita Inu is a Japanese breed, and is considered to be quite rare in other countries. It is believed to be a very old breed, and the Japanese consider it to be their national dog breed. The Akita Inu attracts attention wherever it goes due to a combination of its size, fearless expression and proud composure. They have dark eyes and erect ears, with tips pointing forward. SIZE Adult Akita's can reach up to a height of 71 cm at the shoulder, with a minimum height of around 66 cm. They can weigh anything from 34kg to 50kg. COAT Akita Inus have a coarse outer coat, with a soft and dense undercoat. They will shed their coat twice a week, but other than this, they will not shed any hair. The colour of the coat can vary widely, from black to pure white, and may even be steel blue. CHARACTER & TEMPERAMENT Akitas are very proud animals, with a dominant composition, which means they may be aggressive towards other dogs. It is a dignified breed, and will remain staunchly loyal to its owners, while at the same time maintaining a degree of independence. They are compatible with children, however it is a breed that may take some time to getting used to friends, as they are not very fond of strangers. CARE Akita Inus only ever shed their coat twice a year, and so as such they must be brushed at least once a week to keep a healthy coat. When they do shed, a stripping comb is advised to help remove all the dead hair. Their coats do not grow long, and as such there is no need to take them to groomers. They will require regular baths. TRAINING Akitas are relatively intelligent, and so training is not necessarily difficult. It is definitely required however, as they are strong dogs, and without firm control will happily do as they wish. It is advised that training starts from an early age, and that this training includes a socialising program, in order to lessen the aggressiveness towards other dogs. ACTIVITY While Akitas are large, strong dogs, they cope surprisingly well within apartments. However, most apartments will not accept such large pets, and at the very least a medium sized backyard is necessary, so apartments are unadvisable, yet possible. They require regular moderate exercise to stay in shape, and are very active outdoors.
