Loyal, eager to please and highly intelligent – the Australian Cattle Dog is a popular breed for farmers and families alike. Also known as “Hall’s Heelers”, “Blue Heelers” and “Blueys”, they are a quintessential “Aussie” dog breed.
SIZE
The female Australian Cattle Dog stands at 43-48cm and the male between 46cm and 51cm. Bred for their stamina, they require more exercise than most breeds and are not suitable for apartment living.
COAT
Australian Cattle Dogs have a double coat – a short, dense undercoat with a smooth outer-coat that is close, hard and lies flat, making the coat rain-resistant. They come in colours of blue or speckled red with distinctive mottling patterns and block colour.
They shed more than you would expect from such a short-haired coat, and the hairs sticks to hands, clothing, furniture and carpet.
CHARACTER & TEMPERAMENT

Combined with their intelligence, medium size and loyalty, the Australian Cattle Dog makes for a great family companion, provided it is reared with children from a young age.
With sharp instincts and a determination to do the best job possible, the Australian Cattle Dog excels at guard-dog duty. With the right training, they will protect owner and property without being aggressive.
CARE
The coat requires a weekly brush to stop excess shedding and keep the undercoat in top condition. Monthly baths are required to keep your Aussie Cattle Dog clean, or more often if they find themselves in a pile of mess. Regularly check the undercoat for ticks and the ears for infection.
As a very loyal breed that thrives on your attention, an Australian Cattle Dog will becoming very depressed and withdrawn if left alone for long periods of time.
TRAINING
As the Australian Cattle Dog has a natural bent towards suspicion of strangers, it’s essential to begin obedience training and socialization at an early age. Being intelligent and eager-to-please, the Australian Cattle Dog is adept at learning obedience and tricks, even in its old age. The key to the heart of this breed is through attention and affection – they’ll do anything for a pat!
ACTIVITY
It is of utmost importance that your highly active Aussie Cattle Dog gets enough exercise – they were bred to run up to 50km a day, so access to acreage or an off-leash dog park is essential. A long run should take place every day. Keen to please, chasing a ball will keep an Aussie Cattle Dog entertained for hours and their natural intelligence enjoys learning fancy tricks. Life with an active family is essential to the happiness of this breed.
