Breed InformationThe Bearded Collie is a medium-sized dog that is easily recognizable because of its distinctive shaggy coat. It has a wide and flat head with a short muzzle, ears that hang close to the head, round eyes, a thick beard that grows under its chin (hence the name) and a tail that hangs low. SIZE This dog stands anywhere between 51-56 cm in height and weighs around 18-27 kg. They enjoy running around freely, and so is not a breed suited to living in an apartment. COAT This dog has a double coat that moderately sheds. The outer coat is weatherproof, long, straight, and harsh, while the undercoat is soft, dense, and wooly. Possible coat colours include brown, blue, fawn, grey, or black. CHARACTER & TEMPERAMENT The Bearded Collie is an enthusiastic, lively, cheerful, smart, and affectionate dog. It is a hard worker and enjoys being given tasks to perform. It thrives on human companionship and interaction and will not function well if it is ignored or left alone with nothing to do for a long time. It is friendly and sociable and it gets along well with children, other dogs, other household pets, and even strangers. CARE This dog needs to be combed and brushed on a daily basis to keep its coat smooth and healthy. It is recommended that it be brought to a professional every two months to have its hair clipped. Bathing should only be done when really needed. TRAINING This dog is a fast learner and is quite easy to train. Although it has a stubborn streak, it will respond well to a firm and consistent training approach. It excels in the areas of herding, agility, tracking, trick performance, and competitive obedience. ACTIVITY This breed needs a considerable amount of daily exercise. It enjoys being outdoors and doing all sorts of physical activities like running alongside a bicycle, jogging, playing catch and fetch similar activities.
