Breed InformationBedlington Terriers are medium-sized dogs, whose shape bares a resemblance to Whippets. They are named after Bedlington, a mining town in North East England. SIZE The adult Bedlington Terrier stands around 38-43 cm in height and weighs about 8-10 kg. Bedlington Terriers were originally developed for hunting vermin (fox, badgers, stoats, weasels), as well as game such as hare and rabbit. This work was undertaken in the fairly hostile environment of the border country (between Scotland and England) which is known for low temperatures and snow. So although this breed is perfectly happy outside, Bedlington Terriers are also suitable for indoor living, provided they have access to an outdoor area to roam about at their leisure. COAT The coat of the Bedlington Terrier is light, curly and short. About one inch in length, the coat continues to grow and the length is maintained by clipping or scissoring. Bedligntons come in light colours, such as blue, tan, sandy or a combination of these. Normally, this dog does not shed. The coat should be quite dense with a tendency to twist and standing well out from the body. The modern dog is quite pale in colour though the original colours of the dog were quite dark. Tan is not a recognised coat colour but the Bedlington may have tan markings, these dogs are known as bi-colours and are described as Blue & Tan, Liver & Tan or Sandy & Tan. Hairs which are shed in the normal course of events are trapped in the coat and are removed by grooming (use of slicker brushes and steel combs), failure to groom the dogs on a regular basis will result in quite heavy matting. CHARACTER & TEMPERAMENT Bedlington Terriers are extremely playful, intelligent and happy dogs that are generally good with children, especially if they are exposed to them at an early age. Children should be supervised and aware of how they should behave with dogs. Bedlington Terriers do not have problems with other house hold pets, especially if they have encountered them at a young age. A well bred Bedlington Terrier should not have an aggressive nature but it will not back down from other dogs. In a pack there is generally a well established hierarchy. If new dogs are introduced there may be some "problems” as the new member finds it's pack position. This may be an ongoing problem with dogs of the same gender. CARE The Bedlington Terrier should ideally be brushed daily, or at least twice a week. This activity should be regarded as an opportunity to share time together and improve the bond between owner and dog. Most breeders will provide an information guide on how to clip the dog. If new owners follow the guidelines it should be possible for them to maintain the dog in the characteristic clip the dog is known for. TRAINING While generally fairly responsive Bedlington Terriers are not always reliable on recall. When exercising off-lead ensure that you are in a confined (fenced) area. The Bedlington has been used by poachers throughout their history and are know for being quiet and stealthy on the hunt, not a loud or “barky” dog. ACTIVITY A Bedlington loves to go out for a walk with it"s owners and will be more than happy to fetch a lead to go for a walk. They should also be provided with opportunities to run in off-lead but you need to ensure that they are in an enclosed area. Young dogs do have a tendency to play a lot more than older dogs but most Bedlingtons will be happy to sit quietly with their owners enjoying the company.
