Breed Information
Known as “The Little American Gentleman”, the Boston Terrier is a compact, lively and affectionate dog. The Boston is growing in popularity in Australia. Its gentle nature, small size and playfulness makes for an adaptable dog that is suitable for families, the elderly and apartment living.
SIZE
The compact Boston Terrier stands between 28cm and 38cm tall and grows up to 11kg. This small size is perfect for confined-space living and, given enough play, your Boston Terrier companion can happily live in an apartment.
COAT
The Boston Terrier’s short coat is smooth, bright and has a fine texture. They are black, seal (black with a shine of red) or brindle in colour with distinct markings of white across the muzzle and blaze. The Boston Terrier is a low-shedding dog and has been dubbed “hypoallergenic”, making this breed suitable for those with allergies to dog hair.
CHARACTER & TEMPERAMENT
Rather than undertake normal terrier activities like digging up your backyard, the Boston Terrier (which is not an actual terrier at all), would prefer to be inside, giving you companionship and receiving affection.
Their playful nature makes them a great companion for children but they can be very protective and compete with other pets for your attention.
Their small size is not adequate to provide much worth as a guard dog, but their yap can alert you to strangers (or anyone) wandering near your front door.
CARE
The short, fine coat of this breed is easy to care for. A weekly brush and wipe down is enough to keep it clean, with an occasional bath when required.
Due to its highly loyal nature and huge appetite for affection, you should not leave your Boston Terrier on its own for extended periods of time.
TRAINING
While Boston Terriers are intelligent, you will require patience and persistence when training your “Little Gentleman”. Easily distracted and a little stubborn, the Boston Terrier needs more repetition that most breeds and training should begin from a young age.
ACTIVITY
As a loyal breed that is quite content to lie on your lap while you watch television, your Boston Terrier is not a high-energy dog, but does possess a playful nature that will need to be stimulated. With enough play and stimulation, your Boston Terrier only requires short walks and an occasional run in the outdoors.
