Breed Information
The Boxer is a sturdy, medium sized, smooth-haired dog. Boxers are extremely muscular and combine their great stature with an air of grace. Boxers have a never ending willingness to please, combine this with their intelligence and cleanliness and you have a highly desirable family dog.
SIZE
The female Boxer should stand between 53-58.5cm and the males between 56-61cm. An ideal weight for this breed is between 27-32kgs. Although Boxers do not require a particularly large yard they are certainly not suited to apartment living.
COAT
Boxers have a short and shiny coat which lies smooth and tight to their body. This breed comes in two colours, either Fawn or Brindle. Fawn can be of various shades from light yellow to a dark deer red. The brindle variety on the other hand has black stripes on a golden-yellow or red-brown background. White markings on the Boxer can also look very attractive in appearance.
Both colours of the Boxer boast the stunning black mask that characterizes this noble bearing breed.
CHARACTER & TEMPERAMENT
Boxers are famous for their great love and devotion to their master and household. They are bright and friendly while playing with a seemingly endless supply of energy. Boxers are mostly docile but can be suspicious and distrusting of strangers. This breed will remain true and loyal to their master for as long as they live. Boxers are never false or treacherous even in their old age.
CARE
The Boxer is a fairly low maintenance breed. Aside from the obvious of a warm bed and nutritious meals the greatest need of your Boxer will be your love and attention!
Daily walks will help keep your Boxer toned and fit, as well as providing important mental stimulation for your dog. This is not a breed to be left alone in a back yard all day, they are highly sociable and thrive on human contact.
TRAINING
Gentle training from an early age is recommended for this strong and exuberant breed. Boxers are very intelligent and respond well to consistent training. Too much repetition can be a problem as Boxers have a tendency to bore. Training in multiple short sessions rather than a single long session will prove most effective. Breaking up the short sessions with games are a good idea.
ACTIVITY
A medium sized, fenced yard and regular walks with the family will help to keep your Boxer in his perfectly toned state. Ball games will be a favourite, and swimming can also be tried, your Boxer will let you know very quickly whether he enjoys swimming or not.
