They are a sturdy, abundantly coated dog with a distinctly arrogant, yet enchanting demeanor. SIZE This dog has an average height of up to 27 cm and weighs anywhere between 4-8 kg. They are well-suited for apartment or town house living. COAT This dog has a double coat that is similar to human hair in texture and sheds very minimally. The outer coat is long, thick and profuse, while the undercoat is soft and wooly. The hair covering their eyes is usually tied in a ponytail or a knot to allow the dog to see well and to prevent eye infections. Their coat comes in a wide variety of colours. CHARACTER & TEMPERAMENT The Shih Tzu is an intelligent, lovable, affectionate, friendly, and cheerful dog. They love being cuddled and pampered by their owner and family, yet maintain their independence and won’t appear overly clingy. This breed is an excellent companion and a perfect lapdog. Shih Tzus gets along well with children, other dogs, and other household pets. They are both active and alert. CARE This dog needs to be brushed on a daily basis. Bathing can be done at least once a month. Their hair should be clipped and groomed regularly to keep it healthy and beautiful. Their eyes and ears should be checked and cleaned frequently as these areas are prone to infection. TRAINING Shih Tzus fair well in obedience training especially if they are handled by a firm, consistent, and motivating trainer.
