Breed Information
The “heavy-weight” of the poodle trio, the Standard Poodle is one of the most popular dog breeds in the world. And it’s easy to see why – with a striking coat, playful attitude and extreme loyalty, the Standard Poodle has it all. With a little guidance and discipline, this breed makes for a perfect family companion.
SIZE
To qualify as a “Standard” the Poodle should stand at least 38cm tall. Despite being a large dog, they are an adaptable breed and can happily live in an apartment or a house with a small yard, provided they are given plenty of daily exercise.
COAT
The Poodle’s famous coat is a profuse puff of dense, short, curly hair that has a harsh texture and doesn’t shed. The Standard Poodle comes the solid colours of white, cream, brown, apricot, black, silver or blue.
CHARACTER & TEMPERAMENT
The Standard Poodle is an elegant looking dog that carries itself with an air of pride. Poodles are one of the most intelligent dog breeds. They are loyal and easily trained, quick to pick up commands and love pleasing their human companions.
With their alert nature and intelligence, the Standard Poodle makes for an excellent watchdog and can be trained to alert you of intruders. However, they are so friendly that they don’t make for the best guard dogs.
If over-pampered, this proud pup will become somewhat spoilt and neurotic, but a poodle that knows its place in the pack makes for a great family companion. They enjoy playing and romping with children and, provided they’re introduced at a young age, will happily accept other pets into their “pack”. Standards are considered the most “stable” of the poodle trio.
CARE
Caring for the coat of a poodle can feel like a full time job. The hair never stops growing and needs to be clipped every five to six weeks, or it will matt and pull at the skin. Daily brushing and weekly bathing is necessary to keep your Standard Poodle’s coat in good condition. You will also need to have the ears regularly plucked.
As a very dependant dog that quickly develops a close bond to its owner, it’s not a good idea to leave your poodle on its own for long periods of time – it will quickly become bored, depressed and destructive, and even try to escape.
TRAINING
Training is essential to help your Standard Poodle grow into an ideal companion and it’s highly recommended to attend obedience classes from a young age. Socialization and “house rules” should be in place from early on, and it’s important to let your Poodle know what they can and cannot eat – their insatiable appetites lead them to sticking their noses in everything that smells good.
With their intelligent mind, rest assured that once you have the ground rules covered, your Standard Poodle will be easy to train – focus on rewarding them with tasty treats and you’ll have an obedient pooch in no time!
ACTIVITY
The Standard Poodle is a highly active dog that requires daily walks and plenty of exercise - they are a fun-loving breed that will just as happily splash through water as retrieve a ball or go on a long jog with you.
This is not a breed to leave alone in the backyard for long – once boredom sets in, your Standard Poodle will try many escape tactics to find some fun.
